Perhaps surprisingly, there are very few Lodges actually in the Moremi Game Reserve itself, as most are set in private concessions which surround the central Okavango Delta area (and thus border the Moremi). Therefore there are some Lodges which literally sit on the border of the park, allowing you the chance to go into the Moremi, but also to traverse the private concession. Most lodges are deep in the concession, and you therefore only get to traverse the concession itself. However, these are large tracts of land, there are no other vehicles/ visitors. This allows for some secluded accommodation, and a much more relaxed safari experience – both for you and the wildlife! You don’t have a large number of vehicles crowding the wildlife, if anything, yours is likely to be the only vehicle in sight.
Private concessions often also allow for some selective off-road driving, game walks and night drives. This allows for a more intense Safari experience. Combine this with a boat or mekoro trip on the crystal waters of the Okavango, and you truly have a unique holiday.
Some of the Botswana Lodges in the Okavango don’t even offer game drives at all, as your game viewing and exploring experience is on foot, by mekoro, or small motor boat. In contrast, there are a number of Lodges which have a surprisingly large area in which to do game drives, along with water-based activities. The seasonality of the Okavango Delta also allows for some very varied Safari experiences, depending upon which time of the year you travel.
